This year’s shoot inspiration turns around the whimsical and fantastical Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Styled by British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, expect to be overcome by the incredible costumes and visual stylings. Participating names include Naomi Campbell, RuPaul, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Lupita Nyong’o, Whoopi Goldberg, Duckie Thot and Adwoa Aboah, amongst others. This is Pirelli’s second all-black cast feature since 1987.
“Alice has been told so many times,” Tim Walker said, “and I think I wanted to go back to the genesis of the imagination behind Lewis Carroll so that you could tell it from the very beginning again. I wanted to find a different and original angle.”
“To me, the Pirelli change in direction suggests they are observing what 2017 needs, where the youth are going and what kind of imagery should be out there,” Aboah told The New York Times. “We don’t need any more pinup imagery, and this cast really does depict new ideas of what beauty is. And it certainly doesn’t mean not wearing any clothes.”
Djimon Hounsou added, “it’s really the idea of integration, allowing me to exist in a fantasy world.” “I hope people feel inspired, to as themselves, believe in their dream and get to where they want to be in their life,” said Naomi Campbell. “They can end up on the Calendar and never give up.”
