Located at the recently revealed Dubai Opera in Downtown Dubai, Sean Connolly’s new brasserie, pointedly named “Sean Connolly at Dubai Opera”, serves steak and seafood in a venue with a mid-century aesthetic and a marine ambiance.
Designed by Sydney-based studio Alexander & Co in association with Tribe Studio, the 350 person luxury restaurant combines a Raw bar serving oysters and other shellfish, a Firebar where you can experience a variety of pizzas from a wood fire oven as well as special dining and a chef’s table.
Holding a curvilinear area at the top of the Dubai Opera’s “bow”, a glass and steel building that mirrors an Arabian sailing vessel, the restaurant’s design pulls inspiration from the building’s nautical style as well as Chef Connolly’s enthusiasm for oysters.
A palette of pink and cream leather and light grey marble in the principal dining area evokes the oysters’ luxurious interior while a series of darker greys, greens and black hues in the outside, bring to thought the weathered surface of the shells.
The oceanic theme is additionally improved by the tiled domed ceiling, which echoes both the rippling aspect of the oyster shell and billowing sheets, and the handcrafted woolen carpet dappled in blue that Alexander & Co created wonderfully to follow the ocean waters.
The marine palette is flawlessly complemented by the greens, greys, blues, and whites of the leather and fabric upholstery of the mid-century furniture originals that the designers have eclectically decided to decorate the restaurant.
Accompanying with real walnut finishes and mid-century lamps of such as Serge Mouille’s spider-arm floor lamp in white paint, the restaurant is a jewel of modernist elegance.
