Design Events: Discover Everything About NYCxDESIGN

NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s annual celebration of design, attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees and designers from across the globe. Taking place each May—next occurring May 11–23, 2018—the event celebrates a world of design and showcases over a dozen design disciplines through events taking place across the city’s five boroughs.

BEFORE & BE AFTER: GROWING UP DESIGN WITH LUCAS MAASSEN & SONS

kinder MODERN is a contemporary and vintage design gallery and studio. Applauded for its foundation in inspired and historical child design, the gallery will show a retrospective of Lucas Maassen & Sons for NYCxDesign 2018.

CARIBBEAN CINEMA NIGHT DOWNTOWN KICKOFF

Join this special kickoff event for Caribbean Cinema Nights 2018’s downtown screenings, presented by PrintbyPrint Group, the Caribbean Film Academy and Black Gotham Experience (BGX). Guests will enjoy a night of storytelling through the film from the unique perspective of Caribbean filmmakers, with themes of Resilience and Migration. Guests will have the option of joining an interactive BGX walking tour that explores the fascinating yet unknown connections between the Caribbean and early NYC.

REIMAGINING NYC’S MOST HISTORIC PUBLIC MARKET

After 78 years in its original postwar building, the historic Essex Street Market will move to a new home at the cornerstone of Essex Crossing, a multi-use development project that will transform the Lower East Side with 1.9 million square feet of residential, commercial and community space.

Tour the current market facility at 120 Essex Street, then put on hard hats for an exclusive look at the ongoing construction of the new market location, which has never been viewed by the public.

BKLYN FASHION ACADEMY PRESENTS: MODE EN COULEUR RUNWAY SHOW

The BKLYN Fashion Academy is a twelve-week intensive that will provide fifteen aspiring fashion designers with everything they need to create a mini collection for free. The program will hinge on the history and fashion of Les Sapeurs, a Congolese subculture dedicated to the cult of style and being walking works of art.

WALKING TOUR: MODERN ARCHITECTURE & ADAPTIVE RE-USE IN THE WEST VILLAGE & MEATPACKING DISTRICT

Discover lesser-known examples of Modern architecture, some stunning new buildings, and creative examples of adaptive reuse in the West Village and Meatpacking District. Included are buildings designed by Joseph Urban, Albert Ledner, Edgar Tafel, Paul Rudolph, Hugh Hardy, Kohn Pedersen Fox, SOM, SHoP, Morris Adjmi, Selldorf Architects, WORKac, BKSK, DDG, and others. Several interiors are included.
