Design Miami/ is the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. Occurring alongside the Art Basel fairs in Miami, USA each December and Basel, Switzerland each June, Design Miami/ has become the premier venue for collecting, exhibiting, discussing and creating a collectible design.
This design event is more than a marketplace for design, where the world’s top galleries gather to present museum-quality exhibitions of twentieth and twenty-first-century furniture, lighting and objets d’art. Each show balances exclusive commercial opportunities with progressive cultural programming, creating exciting collaborations with designers and design institutions, panels and lectures with luminaries from the worlds of design, architecture, art, and fashion, and unique commissions from the world’s top emerging and established designers and architects.
By continuously expanding and enriching its program, Design Miami/ seeks to not only satisfy the demand for a high-end design fair, but also to broaden awareness of modern and contemporary design, fuel the market for collectible design, and provide an exciting yet accessible destination for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The galleries invited to exhibit in Design Miami/ deal mainly in exceptional design objects from the advent of Modernism (circa 1900) to the present day, with select galleries specializing in outstanding 18th and 19th-century antiques.
Design Curio is the newest exhibition platform which invites designers, curators, innovators, and gallerists to present cabinets of curiosity throughout the fair. Each Curio reveals a total environment of objects, textures, artifacts, and ideas that challenge and contextualize familiar design narratives.
Design Miami/ collaborates with institutions, partners, and sponsors to present newly commissioned works of design at each fair. These collaborations take the shape of immersive installations, curated exhibitions and unique objects that celebrate design innovation and express keen enthusiasm for design patronage.
Design Talks program presents the design world’s most compelling current topics, bringing together the creatives, collectors, and critics actively influencing design discourse and production.
The 2017 Panerai Design Miami/ Visionary award celebrates community members who have made significant contributions to the field of design. This year, the award is presented to the Mwabwindo School, a collaborative educational project in rural Zambia developed and operated by 14+ Foundation, designed by Selldorf Architects, with artwork by Rashid Johnson, and newly commissioned furniture by Christ & Gantenbein, all of whom have provided their services pro bono. Opening in 2018, the school will provide quality arts-based education to the community.
Design Miami/ invites designers, businesses, and institutions to create unique exhibitions with strong curatorial and educational perspectives. Each satellite program reflects a contemporary view of what’s happening in the design world at large.
