Olafur Eliasson’s Contact lights up The Fondation Louis Vuitton

The new Contact exhibition by Olafur Eliasson, collection of light installations, was specially  designed for the galleries of Frank Gehry’s Fondation Louis Vuitton building, which was completed earlier this year.
The exhibition walks around a sequence of events along an journey where the artist wants to twist viewers’ perceptions of space.  the concept of ‘contact’.

This is the first French solo show of the Danish-Icelandic artist, since his 2002 exhibition at the Musée d’art Moderne de la ville de Paris.
Eliasson has become known for creating this kind of overwhelms environments. In his famous Weather Project in 2003, he created in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall a enormous sun with a semicircle made of hundreds of mono-frequency lamps the other half of the circle was formed by a reflection in the mirrored ceiling.  Viewers would lounge across the floor of the hall, dazzling at their own reflection while relaxing in the sun’s light.

Contact invites visitors to become a part of sequence of darkness, light, geometry and reflections, interacting with physical space in a new way, creating a exceptional, inspiring universe.
A blacked-out gallery is sliced through a beam of orange light that cuts across the curving wall. The contrast between light and shadow tries to give the illusion of the sun crowning over the black silhouette of the earth, the floor is rough imitating the surface of the moon.

“My exhibition addresses that which lies at the edge of our senses and knowledge, of our imagination and our expectations. It is about the horizon that divides, for each of us, the known from the unknown.” Eliasson explained.

The exhibition is not just inside of the gallery , on the roof, Eliasson installed an special device  that tracks the sun and, at certain hours of the day, the light  reflects onto a multifaceted geometric sculpture  – bringing  fragments of light inside the walls of The Fondation .

The exhibition, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Laurence Bossé and Claire Staebler, opened to the public on 17 December and runs until 16 February 2015.
